In the middle of the 19th Century a widowed gunsmith named Brandner Kaspar lives with his granddaughter Nannerl in the mountains. On the verge of his 70th birthday, the Death (in Bavarian: “Boanlkramer”) comes for a visit and wants to take him along. Kaspar as a clever man starts to drink and to play cards with the uninvited – during the play, Kaspar cheated on him to temporize more living time. Soon he recognizes that life has its dark side as well. Nannerl dies in a hunting accident and so he is thinking about to accept the death´s offer for having a look at the heaven…
