The Lechner farmer from Reith (Willy Rösner) can be proud of his life hitherto. He has a model farm and is a deputy to the Landtag. Jacob, his son (Erich Auer), has studied agriculture in the town and will augment the wealth of the farm. Now he only needs the right wife. This is Anni (Elfie Beer), daughter of the mayor and innkeeper (Franz Fröhlich). Money breeds money, there the Lechner farmer and the innkeeper agree. But when Jacob climbs up to the pasture to check on the cattle he meets Liesl, the milkmaid (Hannelore Bollmann), and falls in love with the blonde girl. After the death of her father Liesl and her small brother Hansl (Michael Andre) were taken in by the Lechner farmer. For Jacob she is the ideal wife and ideal for the farm. But his father forbids the wedding, although his mother tries in vain to mediate. Jacob moves to the town to build up his own existence and Liesl weeps bitterly. Hansl is so sad that he can no longer play his ocarina. He goes to the town to find Jacob and tell him of Liesl's worries. He does come back on his own to Reith, but in the end the Lechner farmer's wife hatches a plot to ensure that a happy marriage takes place on the farm and Hansl can again yodel and play music.
