Hans Bondy is a sales rep for slimming pills, as unsuccessful in business as he is with women. In order to get his mind off things he asks his unemployed musician friend Peter Lenz to go with him on a holiday to the Tirol. Both men stay at an inn which is inefficiently run by Ignaz Musbauer, a widower. The latter has a pretty daughter, Gretel. Hans falls in love with her and wants to marry her, but, according to her mother's will, Gretel can only marry when her ugly, nondescript sister Liesel has found a husband. Hans has a daring plan. If he first marries Liesel and then has a quick divorce, nothing will stand in the way of his marriage to the pretty Gretel. So that no one else can make up to Gretel he asks his friend Peter to look after her meanwhile. But when after his marriage Hans sets about getting a divorce there are unexpected changes in Liesl.
