On 2 December 1805 Napoleon defeats the Austrian army at the battle of Austerlitz. A condition of the peace treaty is the surrender of the Tirol to the French. For Tiroleans this signifies the beginning of a tough time under foreign rule. Led by Andreas Hofer, they quickly realize that they cannot resist this superior strength without outside aid. Everyone is mobilized and they succeed in winning back their land piece by piece. Then comes the bad news: due to the great losses, Austria is forced to make peace with Napoleon. The price is the Tirol. Now Hofer finally gives up. Once more his friends are able to persuade him, but they finally encounter superior French strength near Meran and Hofer flees to the mountains. This lull is but brief. Hofer is betrayed to the French for a reward and is executed at Mantua. After Napoleon's fall he is brought back to Innsbruck and buried at the spot where once he celebrated his victory over the French – in the Hofkirche (Court Church) at Innsbruck.Locations in Tirol:
