Newly appointed detective superintendent Stefanie Gschnitzer takes over her first case with the Innsbruck murder squad: Richard Stecher, member of an infamous family of poachers, has been found dead at the foot of a rock. The motive seems to have been self-defence on the part of Hopfgartner, local mayor and hunting ground tenant, his son and Buchberger, the gamekeeper. Seeing the obvious shot wound in the back of the victim's head, the young superintendent has her doubts about the motive, even though the evidence seems to speak for itself. The situation between the poacher's family and the mayor escalates. Stefanie does not have enough authority and her investigation is not taken seriously by those involved. In desperation, she appeals to her mentor, Viennese inspector Moritz Eisner. Eisner travels to the Tirol where Stefanie and he plan what to do next. Moritz investigates undercover; disguised as a hunting guest, he mingles with the others.
