This film tells the story of Sophie, a young girl who leaves a holiday chalet in the Tirolean mountains, and Bataa, a Neanderthal boy freed from the eternal ice by a meteorite. Together, both of them survive unusual adventures and experience a very special friendship. Their companionship outdoors seems to have come to an abrupt end when scientists track them down and try to capture Bataa like a wild animal. Sophie helps him to escape. They hide in an ancient, secret cave, a sacred site for the Neanderthal man. There, Bataa dyes his hair blue with lapis lazuli. When Bataa becomes ill, Sophie persuades her friend to accompany her to the valley. The nearer they get to modern civilization, the more grave Bataa's illness becomes. Sophie is forced to realize that Bataa was not made for our world. When he falls into the hands of scientists, a race against time begins. Sophie cannot win this alone, but only together with her patchwork family. She needs them as Bataa needs his tribe.
