1809 – "Die Freiheit des Adlers" is set during the Napoleonic Wars. The Tirol north and south of the Brenner belongs to Bavaria. At war with Napoleon, Austria foments discontent in the Tirol and, promising to join the Tirol with Austria, incites the peasants to rebel. Andreas Hofer, the "Sandwirt" farmer from Passeier Tal, an upright man with high moral expectations of himself and his comrades, leads the peasants and drives the hated Bavarians and the French troops from the Tirol.
