"Der Schandfleck", the disgrace, is Leni, daughter of the Reindorfer farmer's wife. Her father is not Reindorfer, but Florian Herlinger, the miller. Josef Reindorfer rejects the child, but Leni fights for her stepfather's affection. Flori, the miller's son, and Leni fall in love, Leni not knowing that he is her half-brother. When she learns the truth, she leaves the parental farm and goes to work for the Grasboden farmer, looking after his sick daughter, Burgl. When Reindorfer is driven away from the farm by Leo, his son, and Sefferl, his wife, Leni is the only person who takes him in.
